National
Research Council’s Industrial Research Assistance
Program (NRC-IRAP)
The National Research Council's Industrial Research Assistance
Program (NRC-IRAP) is Canada's premier innovation assistance
program for small and medium-sized Canadian enterprises
(SMEs). It is a vital component of the NRC, a cornerstone
in Canada's innovation system, regarded world-wide as
one of the best programs of its kind.
As a key enabler within Canada's innovation system, NRC-IRAP
provides Canadian SMEs with value-added technological
and business advice, financial assistance and a range
of other innovation assistance. NRC-IRAP helps SMEs realize
their full potential, turning knowledge and innovation
into strategic opportunities, jobs and prosperity for
all Canadians.
Atlantic
Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)
Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) is a federal
government agency. Headquartered in the Atlantic Region,
ACOA's goal is to improve the economy of Atlantic Canadian
communities through the successful development of business
and job opportunities.
Within the ACOA framework is a separate program called
the Atlantic Innovation Fund (AIF). This is a $300-million,
5-year program designed to strengthen the economy of Atlantic
Canada by accelerating the development of knowledge-based
industry. The AIF will help increase the region's capacity
to carry out leading-edge research and development that
directly contributes to the development of new technology-based
economic activity in Atlantic Canada.
AFRI
(Aquaculture & Fisheries Research Initiative)
The Aquaculture and Fisheries Research Initiative was
established by the Government of Prince Edward Island
to provide industry associations, private businesses,
public institutions and/or individual fishers and aquaculturists
with increased access to applied and developmental research
to address priorities and opportunities in the industry.
The Initiative is aimed at:
- Stimulating the conduct of scientifically valid
short-term (normally three years or less) applied
and developmental research related to the aquaculture
sector, to the commercial fishery and to fish
processing in Prince Edward Island.
- Enhancing the knowledge-based economy within the
province by promoting the creation of expertise
that will be available to the industry.
- Building and strengthening partnerships among
research agencies and the private sector.
- Focusing resources on aquaculture and fisheries
related research and development capabilities.
The Initiative is administered by a Board of Directors
representing the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries,
Aquaculture and Forestry, research agencies and the industry.
Aquaculture
Collaborative Research and Developmnet Program (ACRDP)
– Fisheries and Oceans Canada
The Aquaculture Collaborative Research and Development
Program (ACRDP) is a Department of Fisheries and Oceans
(DFO) initiative to increase the level of collaborative
research and development activity between the aquaculture
industry and the department, and in some instances with
other funding partners. ACRDP is an industry-driven program
that teams industry with DFO researchers. Projects will
be conducted at DFO Research facilities or possibly industry
partner facilities. The program will allocate ACRDP funds
to collaborative research projects that are proposed and
jointly funded by aquaculture producer partners. ACRDP
funding is approximately $4.5 million per year and will
be subdivided regionally.
Canadian
Centre for Fisheries Innovation (CCFI)
The Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation (CCFI) is
a non-profit organization owned by Memorial University
of Newfoundland and funded by Atlantic Innovation Fund.
The Centre provides the tools of scientific research and
technology to the fishing industry. CCFI is in the business
of solving technical and scientific challenges for the
Atlantic fishery and the aquaculture industry. Over the
years it has established a reputation for results-oriented,
industrially relevant research and development. Its clientele
has included major processing companies in Atlantic Canada
and innovative harvesters and fish farmers throughout
the region.
The organization was established in 1989 by Memorial University
of Newfoundland and the Marine Institute in St. John's,
Newfoundland. Its mission is to make available to the
industry the largest and best equipped body of experts
in fisheries-related science and technology in Canada.
Through the Centre, the Atlantic Canadian industry can
solve problems and act on opportunities with the help
of hundreds of scientists, engineers and technologists
working at the Centre's shareholder institutions, Memorial
University and its Marine Institute, and at other universities
and technical institutions throughout the Atlantic region.
AquaNet
AquaNet is Canada's research network in aquaculture. It
was established in 1999 as a collaborative research network
involving universities, industry, government and non-government
organisations, with an annual budget of $3.6 million.
The mission of AquaNet is to foster a sustainable aquaculture
sector in Canada through high quality research and education.
AquaNet’s strategic priorities include:
- Advancing Interdisciplinary high quality research
that addresses sector needs and concerns.
- Increasing the number of highly qualified personnel
through education and training.
- Establishing effective networking and partnerships
among academic institutions, federal and provincial
agencies, private sector and non-government sector
participants.
- Effectively translate findings to the research
user community.
- Help build an environment where Canadians are
informed and supportive of aquaculture.
Natural
Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)
NSERC’s role is to make investments in people, discovery
and innovation for the benefit of all Canadians. They
support more than 17,700 university students and postdoctoral
fellows across Canada and fund more than 10,000 university
professors every year. They also help encourage more than
500 Canadian companies invest in university research.
In 2004-2005, NSERC will invest $850 million in university-based
research and training in all the natural scinces and engineering
including aquaculture R&D.
PEI
Atlantic Shrimp Corporation
The PEI Atlantic Shrimp Corporation was established in
August of 2000 with the mandate to manage the Northern
Shrimp allocation in order to maximize the benefits for
the Prince Edward Island fishery and for the Atlantic
fishery as a whole. On the announcement of the PEI allocation
in 2000, DFO stated that the benefits from this allocation
would go to the PEI fishery as a whole and provided a
set of principles for the management of the allocation.
The benefits from the allocation are to be directed at
lobster research; product and market development and research;
and the development and maintenance of the harvesting
sector in PEI, with the priority given to professionalization
of fish harvesters in PEI. Funds associated with this
corporation have benefited the PEI Aquaculture Alliance
Members, including harvesters and processors, in such
areas as Marine Emergency Duties Training and oyster production
and harvest monitoring.
