In May 2003, the PEI Aquaculture Alliance, with the assistance
of the National Research Council’s Industrial Research
Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) and the Atlantic Canada
Opportunities Agency (ACOA) hired a full time Research,
Development and Environmental Management Coordinator (REM).
The role of the REM is varied but the main objectives
are to:
- Identify and update research and development priorities
for the PEI aquaculture industry
- Develop industry-relevant research proposals and impliment/administer
the projects.
- Review the environmental requirements of provincial
and federal agencies that regulate the industry and establish
protocols for evaluating the effectiveness of the PEI
shellfish environmental code of practice.
- Enhance linkages among Atlantic Canadian aquaculture
industry, federal/provincial government, universities
and funding agencies and establish/ impliment/ assist
the redesign the PEIAA website.
- Provide advice to the Executive Director, Board
and members of the Alliance on matters of environment,
research and development and represent the Alliance at
various forums (committees, conferences, meetings and
workshops) on these matters.
