The Bideford Shellfish Hatchery (BSH) is proud to offer our first generation of MSX resistant seed for supply to the PEI oyster industry, produced by taking survivors from PEI sites experiencing high mortality from MSX to target naturally MSX resistant animals and breeding them at BSH. These animals have been crossed to produce a first-generation MSX resistant seed and while it is not expected that these first-cross seed will be fully MSX resistant, they represent the first outputs of an ongoing program devoted to this end. Future spawns starting next season and beyond will employ geno-typing to rapidly work toward production of seed with a very high level of MSX resistance. This seed and this program are the first of its kind in Canada.
